In my last post, I presented to you my theory about the ancient past of Mondstadt and the terraformed lands being linked to the ancient Greek-inspired heritage of Enkanomiya. In today's post, I intend to expand on that theory, reviewing what we learned from Enkanomiya, re-elaborating it and linking it to other ingame and outgame (not spoilers or leaks), in the attempt to understand more on the topic at hand. [Note: while writing this post, this whole thing turned into a monster that was very difficult to condense in one single thing. I will be splitting the mega monster mama theory into chapters, but I promise I will do my very best to avoid painful cliffhangers.] So yesterday, I began researching Enkanomiya in the attempt to dig up some details that I might had missed and that could lead me closer to a better understanding, and that happened while I was reviewing the dialogues of the quest The Subterranean Trials of Drake and Serpent,
On the meaning of our journey in Enkanomiya
In a segment where we meet a specific Sinshade named Argos (Byakuyakoku name) / Aru (Narukami name), we can learn very relevant information:
[...] Aru: I'm in charge of explaining the next step of the trial, which is to restore the "Reins of Revival" and display yourroyal rightover this land. Aru: The Reins of Revival are a national treasure that can be used to command the spirits of the nether to speak, and they are made of the same material as the Dainichi Mikoshi. Aru: The Reins must be pieced together with the Golden Bridle as their core. As such, you need to find three other fragments. [...] Enjou: The special officer corps Chthonios, the armed judges of the nether in Byakuyakoku. That's who the "Jibashiri" are. Enjou: They possessed tokens made out of a special material that could cause the souls of Byakuyakoku to reveal themselves. Paimon:That... doesn't sound like an Inazuman name at all. Enjou: Well, Watatsumi Island was a product of theArchon War. Before that... Enjou: Byakuyakoku's histories are filled with names like Abrax, Spartacus, Chthonios, Gigantus, and such. Enjou: Hmm. So is this human culture wherethe divine envoys do not interfere too much...
Here we learn that our travel in Enkanomiya has a much deeper meaning: restoring theGolden Bridleand itsReins of Revival, made by the same material of the Dainichi Mikoshi, is a display of theTraveler's royal right over this land. There is no way we can mistake these words: does that mean that Enkanomiya is the famous kingdom established among the heavens? And if so... Exactly what is it doing all the way down the Inazuman drain, ridden with scraps-eating vishaps? We also learn that the original language of Enkanomiya was Greek, which suggests to us that the original culture of Enkanomiya, the one Orobashi so eagerly and thoroughly tried to delete and replace with Inazuman culture after insuring that the Dragonheir of the Depths was not going to be reborn as a human, was likely inspired by Ancient Greece. This implies that the various japanese inspired names of this land (Byakuyakoku, Enkanomiya, etc.) are all false names.
Uncovering Enkanomiya's real name
There are many other elements that tie Enkanomiya to Ancient Greece:
The ancient name of Serpent's Heart was Delphi and was said to be "the land of snakes": Delphi is a place in the real world, that by the ancient Greeks was considered to be the center of the world. In legend, this land was previously called Pytho and was a sacred site that served as the seat of a major oracle called Pythia. According to the Suda (ancient Byzantine encyclopedia of the Mediterranean), the name Delphi came from the Delphyne, the she-serpent (drakaina) that lived there and that was killed by Apollo (another Sun God), while in other accounts the serpent was male (drakon) and called Python.
The Styx river that crosses the map and the Lethe Water: Styx and Lethe are two of the five rivers present in the Greek mythological Underworld, called Hades. The mythological river Lethe carries water with a unique property: drinking the waters of this river will allow you to forget your past life. In Genshin, we use the Lethe Water to water the Dragonbone Flower, that then produces a fruit called Dragonbone Orb and that has the same properties of the waters of the mythological river.
The Dainichi Mikoshi's original name was Hyperion, but Abrax also called it Helios.
This perfectly ties into Enkanomiya and the fact that their ancient people co-worshipped Orobashi, the coral serpent, with Ouroboros, the scaleless imaginary serpent. But in this case, it was Orobashi's influence that led to the end of the worship of Helios. The Underworld part is very interesting because it ties together two different mythologies: Greek and Japanese. While Styx and Lethe call to the Greek Underworld, Tokoyo and the Dragonbone Orb call to the Japanese Underworld, where, according to the stories in the Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters) and in the Nihongi (The Chronicles of Japan), during the reign of Emperor Suinin, Tajimamori (interestingly known as the God of Sweets) was sent to, with the task of obtaining a magical fragrant fruit, but failed because, after he got out, he realized that 10 years had passed and the Emperor was already dead. Furthermore, Enjou's comment "Hmm. So is this human culture where the divine envoys do not interfere too much..." suggests that he was asking himself a question: he already understood what the original name of Enkanomiya was, and you're about to find out as well. Because Enkanomiya isn't the first land where we've noticed names or things related to Ancient Greece. The first time we hear of such things is right at the beginning of our journey: Mondstadt. Think about it: isn't the lyre, so sacred to Barbatos and the Nameless Bard, one of the main symbols of Ancient Greek culture? Aren't amphitheaters another main symbol of such culture? The ancient real name of the Musk Reef, isn't it Pilos Peak, like the Greek town Pylos? What if I told you that you already got a glimpse of an Ancient Greek inspired place in Mondstadt while on a quest that for all this time you believed to be a useless waste of time, a joke orchestrated by Kaeya? What if the purpose of that quest was for us to find out the real lost treasure?
A place that exists in the real world, where one of the oldest tribes in all of Greece used to live.
A place that during the European Renaissance was celebrated as an unspoiled, harmonious wilderness.
A place inhabited by followers of a mysteric cult that prescribed to not speak the real name of their goddess to the non initiated.
During Kaeya's Story Quest: Pavo Ocellus Chapter, we embark on a little adventure with Kaeya to find the treasure left behind by his pirate grandfather: a sword, buried in a place called the Lost Arcadian Ruins. The name of the Ancient Greece inspired land located to the east of today's Mondstadt and that was likely managed/inhabited by Istaroth was Arcadia and what's crazier is that Enkanomiya was part of it. Infact, the whole of Teyvat was part of it, for Arcadia is the primeval civilization of this world.
A domain on the eastern coast, where the ancient land was terraformed by Venti.
A domain that contains a ruin guard inside.
A domain with the same architectural style as Enkanomiya.
A domain that's relatively close to the Amphitheater dedicated to Istaroth.
For reasons unknown, Arcadia was terraformed in a unique way (probably not only by Venti, but also by Celestia, possibly causing some sort of scattering phenomena that affected the land), but judging by the Ancient Greek theme and the architectural style, we can assume that Arcadia originally included:
The Golden Apple Archipelago, who's name is another cluster clue that ties Ancient Greece, the Moons mythology, Enkanomiya/Arcadia, Mondstadt all together: the Golden Apple refers to the object that the goddess of Discord, Eris, tossed in middle of the feast of the gods during a celestial wedding she wasn't invited to in order to create chaos; the name Eris is also mentioned in the Byakuyakoku Collection, in the Appendix: Historical Figures, Their Traditional Names, and Narukami-Style Renderings with Eris being the Traditional Name and Arisu being the Nakurami-Style Rendering. And yes, Arisu is very likely Alice: this would definitely tie together Mondstadt, Arcadia/Enkanomiya and Watatsumi.

Bonus theory - The Dandelion Knight
The Lost Arcadian Ruins are relatively close the Temple of the Lion of the South, the Dandelion Knight, the only Favonius Knight with an unexplored lore, that also appears as a demon in the Ars Goetia. From Wikipedia:
The Seventy-first Spirit is Dantalion. He is a Duke Great and Mighty, appearing in the Form of a Man with many Countenances, all Men's and Women's Faces; and he hath a Book in his right hand. His Office is to teach all Arts and Sciences unto any; and to declare the Secret Counsel of any one; for he knoweth the Thoughts of all Men and Women, and can change them at his Will. He can cause Love, and show the Similitude of any person, and show the same by a Vision, let them be in what part of the World they Will.
Who was the Dandelion Knight? Why was he important enough to include as a Wind of Mondstadt, but he appears to be forgotten by history? Or could it be that the Dandelion Knight is yet to come? At the end of the Prologue, Act III: Song of the Dragon and Freedom, Ending Note, Venti offers the Traveler to become one of the Four Winds once they find their sibling. At the end of our journey, with all our powers restored, we will bring back Teyvat as it once was, we will bring back the lost Dandelion Sea and thus becoming the Dandelion Knight. Or it could be just a piece of lore that we'll learn in the future. "Well, why your fixation with the Dandelion Knight?" you might ask. Dandelions also heavily tie with Greek mythology: the Dandelion flower was a flower sacred to Hekate, goddess of the Underworld but also thought to be a diva triformis - a three-form goddess, specifically a three-form Moon goddess. The goddesses associated in such triads are so many that it's difficult to find an original triad, however, there is a concept that is reiterated in different sources: the concept of one deity being addressed with different names according to the realm they're in: From Wikipedia
E. Cobham Brewer's 1894 Dictionary of Phrase & Fable contained the entry, "Hecate: A triple deity, called Phoebe or the Moon in heaven, Diana on the earth, and Hecate or Proserpine in hell"
In Genshin, this aspect could relate to the many "Moon cities": it could very well be that certain deities chose to present with different emanations/avatar in each civilization. Although that would make them more of a Principle than a deity... Another very interesting concept that we can find on Wikipedia, regarding Hekate is that
Greek poet Hesiod represents her as a threefold goddess, with a share in earth, sea, and starry heavens.

Not only does this distract from the OP's query, but complaints submitted through modmail will be more easily accessible to the whole mod team. Oftentimes, replying to a mod’s decision within the thread will result in only that same mod seeing your complaint. The Revised Rules are as follows. Rule 1 and 3 have been clarified slightly, and Rule 4 has been split into two separate Rules, so as to allow a clearer moderation policy. A more detailed clarification of Rule 3 is also included below which will be posted to the wiki for future reference
Revised Rules
Rule #1: Submissions and comments should remain within academic Biblical studies, not solely personal opinion This sub focuses on academic scholarship of Biblical interpretation/history (e.g. “What did the ancient Canaanites believe?”, “How did the concept of Hell develop?”). Modern events and movements are off-topic, as is personal application/interpretation, or recommendations. All questions solely asking these (e.g. “What’s your favorite Translation?”, “What do you think about Paul?”) can be posted in the Weekly Open Discussion thread. Poll questions are also not allowed as they are not academic. Rule #2: Contributions should not invoke theological beliefs Claims involving the supernatural are off-topic for this sub. This approach is called “methodological naturalism” and it restricts history claims and the historical method to be limited to human and natural causation. This is an acknowledged methodological limitation, not a philosophical affirmation. Issues of divine causation are left to the distinct discipline of theology. Theological discussions/debates (excepting historical detailing) will be removed, along with pro/anti religious posts. Rule #3: Claims should be informed, accurate, and supported through citation of appropriate academic sources Any claim which isn't supported by at least one citation of an appropriate scholarly source will be removed. An exception would be for a claim of basic fact that is especially trivial or academically uncontested (e.g. "the New Testament is written in Greek"). In addition, secondary comments which discuss a previously cited source would be covered by that prior source and don't require additional citations. Any comment that is especially vague or superficial, or which contains factually inaccurate information or misrepresents the scholarship will be removed. Rule #4: No bigotry or abusive behaviour This includes any harassment, slurs, oppressive language, racism, misogyny, transphobia, homophobia, or anti-Semitism. We have a zero tolerance policy for this and any bigotry or abuse will result in an immediate permanent ban. Rule 5: No insults, trolling, or spam This includes any insulting language, discourtesy, derision, disparagement, or slander of either other users, scholars, or mods. Any such behaviour may result in a temporary or permanent ban at the moderators' discretion. Spam is considered any advertisement or promotion of your own (or your friend’s/family member’s) product/media. Guide to Rule 3’s definition of Academic Sources
This will be saved in the wiki for linking to later Rule 3 has long been clear that every claim needs to be backed by a relevant academic source. However there has been some confusion from users as to what this means. So for clarity, here are some guidelines of how the mods will apply this rule and enforce it. 1. All top-level comments that contain one or more specific claims will always require at least one academic source to be mentioned somewhere in the post. Note: Ideally multiple claims within a post should each have scholarly backing. But, as it's impractical for mods to check, so long as one source is mentioned, all claims in the post will pass muster. However if any claim in your post isn't actually backed up by the source you've cited another user who knows better may notify us that you're misrepresenting the source and then we'll remove your comment anyway (and we'll be pretty miffed about it). Remember, there aren't any extra points for the most original/obscure source. Many claims can most easily be backed up by simply referring the reader to an introductory article in a decent study bible or commentary like Oxford or HarperCollins. The Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary or BibleOdyssey.com for instance is a great source for claims which aren't getting into cutting-edge research but simply represent the general mainstream position on many issues. Even footnotes in scholarly Bibles can be an easy source for many basic claims. A biblical text may be cited as an answer to basic informational questions, but remember that the Bible is not an academic source for its own interpretation. In most cases any Bible quote should be accompanied by an appropriate engagement with the current scholarship on it, and appropriately sourced. Exceptions are: a) Comments that don't make a claim (i.e. a follow-up question, or a link to a previous sourced answer). Links to well-sourced articles off-site are also sometimes acceptable. As a general rule, a linked article is acceptable if it does not itself violate the sub's Rules. If the same thing would be allowed in a comment then it would usually be allowed as an off-site link. There are sometimes exceptions to this where the "host site" is problematic in some ways (like visible and intense bigotry, polemics, or confessional proselytism), or content is anonymously crowdsourced (e.g. Wikipedia* ). These sites would not be allowed. b) Claims that are especially trivial or such a basic fact as to be academically uncontested (i.e. "the New Testament is written in Greek", "Jesus was an historical person", etc.). This includes basic claims about language/philology (e.g. "How is Ἰησοῦς pronounced?"). c) Claims about historical views or writings - these can be supported by primary sources rather than academic sources (i.e. a question about what Josephus thought about the Zealots could be answered by a cited quotation from Josephus rather than a current academic source. Exception 1.c is only acceptable so long as it is made clear that it is a claim from the period and not a view current to academia. Ideally a fuller answer would go on to provide some academic commentary on the primary source but it would be sufficient on its own for a very basic comment. 2. Follow-up comments will be addressed on a case-by-case basis. In general any major new claim will always require a new source to be cited, just as in a top-level reply. However exceptions would be: a) If a user is only commenting on a previously-mentioned source - then a new source isn't required. Secondary comments that generally discuss the claims already made will be assumed to be covered by the source already cited. b) Replies to follow-up questions which ask specifically for personal opinions (e.g. "what do you think about that argument", or, "can you explain that point in more detail"). While personal questions are not appropriate for Post Submissions, they are fine as follow-up comments. 3. An academic source is understood to contain all of the below qualities: a)Either any work on academic Biblical studies by anyone published by a reputable academic publisher, or any recorded statement by a professional Biblical scholar or scholar of an adjacent field directly relevant to the topic discussed (e.g. ANE studies, Classical studies, etc). A professional scholar is someone with an MA or higher in their field who has been employed as a scholar by a reputable academic institution (i.e. a University, Academic Society, or Scholarly Journal). b) Relevant to the topic under discussion. c) Representing current scholarship (unless used specifically as an example of historical views). This usually means it's been published after 1960, though ideally works towards the older end of that range, or re-editions, should have their original publication date noted in the comment so readers can be aware. However, occasionally older sources can be accepted if it’s a particularly niche topic and the comment explains how its still relevant. Note: This means that a claim cannot be supported only by Bible quotations (or quotations from the Talmud or Church Fathers for that matter), or by a web article by someone who isn't a professional Bible scholar (or relevant adjacent field). However some claims could be supported by a recorded lecture by a professional scholar or even a tweet by them. Others could be supported by citing a basic published general reference work. There are sometimes exceptions made for particularly well-sourced articles online – if you’re not sure if a source qualifies then ask the mods. * Claims cannot be supported by Wikipedia only. It’s true that some articles can be high-quality these days but that cannot be assumed, and any article could change overnight. If an article contains good information then cite the scholarly reference from it as support, and not the article itself. As for possible reptilian pop culture references, there is the 1983 miniseries called V. In the miniseries, V signifies the rebellion against an extraterrestrial reptilian race hiding behind masks of humans. As for Antartica, the most famous movie that takes place there is the 1982 movie The Thing. This is a movie about a parasitic extraterrestrial taking the form of its host. Another allegory of the 'extraterrestrial' parasitic 'Alpha Centauri AI', acting as body snatchers. Mr.Blue Eyes appears in Dream On where he stares at Jefferson. This mission is full of symbolism of dreams, the color blue and the ( blue )moon. In the following I will try to extrapolate through ancient myths and pop culture, what Mr.Blue Eyes symbolizes and why Misty has a blue eye in her shop. Let's go a couple of thousand years back. The Egyptian gods Horus and Seth/Set battled each other over who would succeed Osiris' throne to be king. During this battle Horus' left eye was injured, and eventually his left eye was restored. In pop culture there are countless of examples of characters with a scarred left eye. The most notable with actually the word 'scar' in their name, would be Scar from The Lion King and Scarface a.k.a. Tony Montana Regarding CDPR content we see the left eye scar symbolism on Geralt, Vesemir and Ciri ( and plenty of other characters ). In Cyberpunk 2077 we see the vertical left eye scar on 'Venus in Furs' Meredith Stout, and Saburo Arasaka. Many Egyptian texts say that Horus' right eye was the sun and his left eye the moon. Some Egyptologists claim that originally the left eye represented the morning star a.k.a. Venus. Left eye scars In the Destroy After Reading shard, using a Null Cipher it reads: Project: Oracle , Command: execute plans. I believe that the Oracle is referring to Misty. She is female ( as oracles usually are ) and she gives oracle-like services. In Per-Wadjet, Egypt ( now Aphroditopolis, one of the greek gods representing Venus is Aphrodite ) there was an oracle in the temple dedicated to Wadjet. This oracle may have been the source for the oracular tradition that spread from Egypt to Greece. The Egyptian patron goddess Wadjet was usually depicted as a reptilian cobra snake woman. The Egyptian word Wadjet signifies blue and green. It is also the name for the well known "Eye of the Moon"( Eye of Horus ). In the (still) most popular anime in the world Naruto, there is a character called Madara ( with his hair down only revealing his left eye ) that created the "Eye of the Moon Plan." His goal is to project a 'spell' on the moon in order to trap the entire world in a dream, thus saving mankind from destroying itself but also at the price of robbing free will from the entire world. This sounds quite a bit like what the blue eyed people in Cyberpunk I think are doing, but maybe not so much on the saving mankind part. In Naruto there is also a character called Kakashi, that has a scarred left eye ( that must be covered to preserve his magic powers ) that is eventually restored. That sounds indeed like the story of Horus. In the Witcher 3, there is a character called Sarah who is as far as I know is the only godling with cloudy blue eyes. She is an oneiromancer ( from Greek oneiro meaning dream ) and in her Gwent card she is depicted with a blue moon in the background. OneiromanceDream manipulator with blue eyes and blue moon The blue amulets of the left eye of Horus was believed to have protective magical powers and they may have been the predeccesor of the blue Evil Eye amulets. The Evil Eye concept exists all over the world and around 40% of the world population believes in it. It is believed to be a force that casts or reflects a malevolent gaze back-upon those who wish harm upon others (especially innocents). I could not find any good sources on why the Evil Eye is blue, but most sources that I could find claim that it is because people with blue eyes were quite rare in the region where the concept originated so out of xenophobia they believed that people with blue eyes would bring harm and bad luck. For these reasons I think that the Eye of Horus blue eye in Misty's shop is a protective talisman against the AI of the blue eyed people, including Mr.Blue Eyes. I think also when Mr.Blue Eyes is gazing or staring at Jefferson he is 'cursing' him or putting him under his spell and is an allegory to the Evil Eye(s). The real or let's say scientific reason he has blue eyes is because the constant data stream of the possessing AI lighting his eyes blue. Blue eye/Evil Eye In the Sun ending, the only time we hear the word sun is when Mr.Blue Eyes talks to us.Mr.B talks about the job in the Crystal Palace and he says: "Where I'm from, they'd say it's straight impossible. They'd say you're taking too big of a risk. Poetically speaking, flying towards the sun to burn up." Most people will think of the story of Icarus that made artificial wings and flew too close to the sun. However the story of the morning staVenus in Babylonian and Canaanite mythology and the Bible, has similar stories of the fall from heaven that can be explained through astrology. These stories seem to describe the process by which the bright morning star fails to reach the highest point in the sky before being faded out by the rising sun. The morning star in the Bible is the fallen angel Lucifer ( Latin for Light-bearer ). The blue Eye of Horus at Misty's seems to be about CRYSTAL RADIATION as is written above it. This makes me think of the first 2 words of the Destroy After Reading/Project Oracle shard: "Phosphor radiates,.." Phosphor is a crystal lattice that when radiated it emits light. This is how glow in the dark things work, but also CRT,plasma and LED screens. The word phosphor comes from the Greek Phosphorus ( meaning Light-bearer ) which is one of the Greek gods of the morning staVenus. Crystal radiation/ Crystal lattice Another connection with 'crystal radiation'/Crystal Palace and the morning star, is that when we have the sun ending with Judy, we wake up in the morning and as we look with Judy at the moon with the Crystal Palace next to it she says: "You know, guess you could mistake it for Venus..." All this makes me believe that Mr.Blue Eyes is an allegory to Lucifer. He also looks like the handsome calm and collected influential Lucifer we see depicted in pop culture. The way his hair is combed to his right showing his receding hairline when he keeps looking sideways in the sun ending one could say it looks like a horn. I also believe he is mind controlling V's decisions in the sun ending. In the sun ending with River, River would say: River: Listen... what's... what's happening to you? Something's wrong, V. I can feel it. V: Cop's intuition? River: Just talk to me. You've been different since Mikoshi. Absent, somehow. What is it? He knows about V dying, so V being absent might be Mr.B's influence. Another reason I think we are under Mr.B's spell, is because when we are in the shuttle and we are about to pick up our space helmet, right next to it "NOT ME" is written. So what about Alpha Centauri you may still ask? Cyberpunk 2077 is heavily influenced by William Gibson's Sprawl trilogy. In the trilogy, there is an orbital space casino called Freeside where at the tip of the 'spindle' there is Villa Straylight. At Villa Straylight, to make a long story short, 2 AI's merge and become a super AI trying to contact an AI in Alpha Centauri. In the very end of the Sun ending, Mr.Blue Eyes tells us "meet you at the bottom" ( of Crystal Palace ). Just as where Villa Straylight would be. For my closing remarks I will summerize my 3 posts: Hell is the Net and Night City. Lilith is an AI using Alt's engramatic data. The Devil is Saburo Arasaka. Mr.Blue Eyes is Lucifer. Vampires are Arasaka with Soulkiller. Werewolves are the Biotechnica clones with Relic-like AI uploaded. Reptilians are the blue eyed people like Mr.Blue Eyes and the ones that took Garry away. In OoT, we see the lore established in ALTTP expanded upon, sometimes greatly. The three creator gods are now the Golden Goddesses, and they are given names. Din is the Goddess of Power, Nayru is the Goddess of Wisdom, and Farore is the Goddess of Courage. As for the Triforce:
神々の 去りし地に、黄金の聖三角 残し置く。 Golden sacred/holy triangles were left behind in the land from which the gods left. この後、その 聖三角を 世の理の 礎とするものなり。 After that, those sacred/holy triangles became the cornerstone/foundation of the world’s principles/reason.
Here we see emphasised the role the Triforce has in being the foundation upon which reality is built. The ordered reality the Golden Goddesses created out of chaos is based on many different principles or “reasons”. This same Japanese word is the one used to describe the Essences of Nature and Time from the Oracle games. I go into much greater detail about the importance of the Essences here. They are the building blocks of reality, placed upon the cornerstone of the Triforce. We can illustrate it by imagining a building. A building is constructed from different materials on top of a foundation. If the foundation suddenly disappeared, the building would collapse. The foundation supports the entire building. The same applies with the Triforce and reality. The Triforce also rules the entire Light World, as ALTTP pointed out. As we discussed earlier, throughout the series it is clear that this rule is delegated to different guardians and deities within the Light World who act as its proxies. Many of these gods have dominion over an elemental force or region of the Light World. But, all of them are under the governance of the Triforce. Therefore, while each tribe of the Light World may have their own deity that they worship, ultimately it is the Triforce that is the basis for that worship. (As a side note, this would explain why the Gods Tribe cannot use the Triforce. It’s because they are essentially part of the mechanism it uses in order to control creation. They are cogs in the machine. The mortal races on the other hand are gifted with free will, and are able to determine their own fate and that of the Light World.) In OoT, we also see the connection between the Triforce and Light more clearly (pun intended). Within the Sacred Realm, the Triforce is housed in the Temple of Light, cementing that connection. Light is also established as one of the Elements. The Light Barrier room in Ganon’s Castle use puzzles around the theme of enlightenment, shedding the light of truth on things that are hidden. The first puzzle involves using the Lens of Truth. In order to proceed, all the invisible Keese in the room must be killed. The last puzzle puts a twist on the end of each of these Barrier rooms. To bring down the barrier, there should be an orb that must be destroyed with the Light Arrows, but it’s nowhere to be seen. Again, using the Lens of Truth sheds Light on the matter. Light is also the Element associated with the divine, and what is holy. For example, Zelda says:
魔王の守りを 破るもの… 選ばれし者に 神が与えたもう力… 聖なる 光の矢を！！ The thing to break through the Demon King's defences... The power bestowed to those chosen by the gods... The holy Light Arrows!!
And the description for the Light Arrows says:
光の矢を 手に入れた！Γにセットで 弓矢が変化。聖なる光が 悪を射る！！ You got the Light Arrows! Set them to [] and change the bow and arrow. Shoot at evil with the holy light!!
This holy light is the power of those chosen by the gods. This is an obvious reference to the Triforce, and in ALBW it’s made explicit when Link gains the Bow of Light:
Bow bathed in the light of the Triforce.
Therefore, it’s appropriate that another puzzle in the Light Barrier room involves playing Zelda’s Lullaby on the mark of the Triforce. But you might be thinking, what about TP? Isn’t Light connected to the Light Spirits in that game? Well as I mentioned earlier, the gods of Hyrule, including the Light Spirits, are under the governance of the Triforce, and are its proxies.

According to the command of the gods, I am this forest’s protector. -Faron しかし、神は我ら光の精霊を遣わし その者達の巨大なる魔力を封じこませたのだ But the goddesses sent us light spirits to seal away the gigantic magic of those people. -Lanayru 現世の大地をあまねく照らす大いなるカ任されし光の精霊達よ… 今こそ、退魔の光我に与えよ！！ "O spirits of light entrusted with the great power which shines upon all things in this land… Now, bestow upon me the light to banish evil!!" -Princess Zelda
The Light Spirits are commanded by the Gods. Since the Golden Goddesses have left the world, these commands must come through the representative they left behind to rule the Light World in their place. The Triforce. Remember, the Triforce is in a sense alive. It has a spirit of its own. It talks to Link at the end of ALTTP, and the beginning of the Oracle games. Note too that Zelda says that the Light Spirits have been entrusted with a great power that shines upon all things. To be entrusted with it means that it does not originate with them. It is the light to banish evil, a holy light. The Light of the Triforce. Now, there’s the possibility that the Light Spirits are specifically talking about Force. Force is the sacred/holy life-force found in all living things. This Force was originally bestowed upon creation by the Golden Goddesses, and that’s why it is sacred/holy. But it must be the holy Triforce that maintains and governs Force in creation. In the ALTTP manual it is called the Master Force, and in OoT it is also called the True Force, which governs all. The Triforce is the personal power of the Golden Goddesses, therefore it contains all of the power and knowledge needed to create reality, including life and the Force within it. (This explains how it is able to fulfil wishes.) Without the Triforce all creation, all life, eventually dies. Therefore, all life in the Light World is connected to the Triforce. And so, all Force in the Light World is ultimately connected to the Triforce. (The only life that can exist independently of the Triforce must exist outside of its reality, such as the Golden Goddesses, and undead/demonic life which is sustained by Malice.) This would mean that other sources of Light, or objects associated with Light, are also ultimately connected to the Triforce. This would include the Light Arrows and Bows found in other games, like TMC and ST, which do not have an explicit connection to the Triforce. Having established how the Triforce is the foundation of reality, let’s see what else OoT teaches us about the Triforce. This is the game that firmly establishes the connection between the Triforce and the Royal Family of Hyrule. In the previous games, various members of the Royal Family held, used, or guarded different pieces of the Triforce, or even the complete Triforce. Their role as guardians of the Triforce is again repeated in this game. The Royal Family holds the knowledge, and one of the keys, needed to enter the Sacred Realm. The ties between the two are emphasised by how the Royal Family has incorporated the symbol of the Triforce into its own heraldry and identity. While Princess Zelda does have the symbol of the Triforce on her dress in ALTTP, the crest of the Royal Family is first introduced in OoT, and it consists of two symbols: the Triforce above the outstretched wings of a bird. Both symbols are significant to the history and identity of the Royal Family, however the meaning of the bird will not be completely revealed until SS. For now, we want to focus on the fact that the Royal Family has the Triforce as a part of their heraldry and identity. Remember, it’s the ultimate symbol of divinity and power in the Light World. A symbol of worship that is the basis for all religion in the Light World. This is what the Royal Family, Zelda’s family, identify themselves with. Throughout the world, Link is able to show that he has a connection with the Royal Family by playing their song, Zelda’s Lullaby, on the mark of the Triforce. This family has attached themselves to the Triforce. Now, as the guardians of the Triforce throughout history, we may think that it’s natural for the Royal Family to be linked to the Triforce. However, there’s an unspoken implication by choosing to make that symbol their symbol. Remember, in ALTTP we were told that the Triforce rules the entire Light World. So, what does it imply when the Royal Family of Hyrule Kingdom chooses that symbol as their own? That they are more than just its guardians. They rule by divine right. Or so they believe. The divine right of kings is a real world doctrine used by the monarchies of European Christian countries. It says that the royal families of those countries receive their right to rule from God. It is their divine right. These monarchs believe that they are not accountable to any earthly authority, only to God. As such, they are also viewed as the defenders/guardians of the faith. Politics and religion, the Church and State, are strongly tied together. However, one important thing to note is that the divine right of kings does not necessarily make the monarch a sacred king: that is a king who is also a priest. In OoT, I believe that once again Hyrule Kingdom and its religion are being influenced by Christianity. The OoT Beta leak revealed that an earlier version of the game featured the cross symbol on gravestones, as can be seen here and here. In the released version of OoT, these Christian references may not be as explicit, but they are certainly still in the background. Consider the way Hyrule Castle Town is designed. The art style. The music. It looks like a medieval European town in Christendom. What about the main building for worship in town, the Temple of Time? It unmistakably looks like a cathedral! And, the music inside it sounds like a chant by Gregorian monks. Are all these supposed to be coincidences, or were they purposely designed that way? I think the answer is obvious. In OoT, there’s absolutely no doubt what real world references the developers decided to model Hyrule Kingdom on, especially when we consider the tribe they chose to be their enemy. The Gerudo.
Goddess Of The Sun
To the west of the vibrant green fields of Hyrule Kingdom lies the home of the Gerudo. Largely a place of shifting desert sands, and rocky barren canyons, the sharp contrast between the two environments is mirrored by the cultures who inhabit them. As highlighted earlier, in ALTTP the desert had a negative reputation, and it was connected with Ancient Egyptian culture. It also described the then nameless Gerudo as a race of evil thieves. Not a very noble description. With OoT, we see why that description, and the desert’s reputation, would have become popular in Hyrule Kingdom by the time of ALTTP, but also why it is false. The Gerudo are inherently a noble people, exemplified by Nabooru, the lone wolf thief. Yes she’s a thief, but more in the tradition of Robin Hood. She hates the evil oppression and influence of her tribe’s leaders, Ganondorf and Twinrova. Ganondorf steals from women and children, and he kills people. The Gerudo are an all female tribe, with one man born every one hundred years. Their law states that this man will be their king, and the Gerudo during the time of OoT worship Ganondorf like a god. Therefore in OoT, the Gerudo are torn between their inherently good nature, and the evil influence of their leaders. The true nature of the Gerudo, without the influence of Ganondorf and Twinrova, is fully seen in BotW. We might wonder about the foolishness of a people deifying a monarch because of their birthright, but we’ll get to the Hylians soon enough. While there are many immediate differences between the Gerudo and the Hylians, beneath the surface there are many similarities. You might initially disagree with that statement, but I ask that you be patient as I develop this idea. Doing so requires that we examine SS and BotW later on. For now, the similarities and differences of these two enemy nations, in OoT, is brought into focus when we consider the real world influences the developers looked to when creating the Gerudo. The Gerudo do not have a one-to-one correlation with a single real world culture. There’s evidence of many different cultures and mythological inspirations. Going from their initial description in ALTTP as a race of evil thieves, it seems like Nintendo initially turned to the Arabic collection of folk tales One Thousand and One Nights, compiled during the Islamic Golden Age. In particular, the story of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. The Flying Carpet Merchant in the Haunted Wasteland also seems to be a reference to those folk tales. Another likely mythological inspiration are the Amazons from Greek mythology, a tribe of warrior women. Many of the cultural references are taken from desert based cultures found around the world. The design of the Gerudo Fortress is similar to Native American architecture from the Southwest of North America, or structures from Mali in North Africa. In fact, when it comes to the Gerudo, there are many influences from Northern Africa and the Middle East. These two regions are noteworthy because they share a dominant cultural influence in history. They contain predominantly Islamic nations. There’s absolutely no denying that when the developers were creating the Gerudo for OoT they looked to these Islamic nations and cultures. We see references to Middle Eastern cultures, and to the ancient religion of Egypt, which is now a Muslim nation. It’s especially clear when we consider what they originally chose to be the Gerudo Crest, a mirrored version of the star and crescent symbol. Just like the Cross, this symbol is much older than the real world religion it is commonly associated with today. The connection is believed to have formed through the flag of the Ottoman Empire, an Islamic Empire that ruled over many Christian and Jewish people. The conflicts between Christian and Muslim nations and empires throughout history is well known. We can think of Jerusalem in Palestine, and the Crusades. The Spanish guitar in the Gerudo Valley theme also points to another meeting between these two religious empires: The Moors of Spain. In 711 AD, a group of Muslim North Africans captured the Iberian Peninsula (modern Spain and Portugal) leading to many centuries of tension and conflict between them and the European Christians. This real world tension and conflict throughout history was the basis the developers of OoT used in creating the tension and conflict between the Christian influenced Hyrule Kingdom, and the Islamic influenced Gerudo. Understandably, this raised some eyebrows, and in order to avoid offence the overt Gerudo Crest was changed. But there’s no denying that connection. Two national groups with different religions in conflict with each other, with one side being a darker skinned race from the desert. But in digging a little deeper, we also start to see the similarities between the Hylians and the Gerudo, similarities reflected in their real world influences. Both Christianity and Islam share much in common. They both, along with Judaism, stem from the same root. They are all Abrahamic religions. Monotheistic religions which worship the God of Abraham, and from that come similarities despite their differences. Remember that I mentioned earlier that all religion in the Light World must be based on the Triforce, and in turn the Golden Goddesses that it represents. These elements can be obscured, but they are always in the background. Is this true for the Gerudo? I would argue yes, but you have to look for it, in the same way that you have to look for it with the Hylians in SS and BotW. First of all, the Gerudo believe in the Triforce. They don’t deny its existence as a false belief of the Hylians. In fact, their leader wants to capture and take it from the Hylians. Thinking of their real world influences, it’s easy to compare that to the struggle over the holy city of Jerusalem by both the Christians and the Muslims. Ganondorf recognises that the Triforce is the power of the gods, so he recognises that the Golden Goddesses exist. Now it’s true that in TWW, when referring to the flooding of Hyrule, he says:
神に滅ぼされたのだ！！
Which NoA translates as:
Your gods destroyed you!
If he’s talking about the Golden Goddesses, that seems to imply that they’re not his gods. But, there’s a few things to consider. First, the literal translation doesn’t say “your”,
The God(s) destroyed it!!
Also, this statement is made after he says that the Hylians called to their gods for help. So, he is mocking them. “You called to them for help, and they destroyed your land.” Finally, Ganondorf could be viewed as an apostate. A former worshipper of the Golden Goddesses, but now an enemy. Still, as he approaches the complete Triforce to make his wish, he directs his words to the gods it represents:
神よ！ 我が望みを聞け！！ Gods! Listen to my wishes!!
Therefore, we have no reason to say that the Gerudo in general don’t revere the Triforce, and in turn the Golden Goddesses. In fact, when we look at their place of worship, the Spirit Temple (Soul Temple in Japanese), we see evidence that they do. A temple in the desert reminds us of the connection between the desert culture of the Light World and Ancient Egyptian symbolism, which was first introduced in ALTTP. The fact that this temple was built in reverence to the Triforce is most clearly seen at the entrance to the temple. Below the massive statue of the Goddess of the Sand, on the lintel above the entrance, is a carving of the Triforce. A very basic comparison would say that it is similar to the crest of the Royal Family of Hyrule Kingdom, as this depiction of the Triforce is also connected to the wings of a bird, again hinting at the similarities between the two groups. However, there are important differences too. This carving of the Triforce is within a disc, from which the wings extend. The undeniable influence of Ancient Egypt on the design of the Soul Temple let’s us identify this as a Winged Sun. This solar symbol is associated with divinity, royalty, and power. Huh. Sound familiar? The Triforce at the centre of the Sun, a source of Light. It’s connected with divinity and power. And, it’s connected with royalty. The divine right to rule, just like with the Royal Family of Hyrule Kingdom. However, the Gerudo do not possess the Triforce, so they have not appropriated the symbol as part of their identity. The mark of the Triforce is also found throughout the temple, even on the palm of the Goddess of the Sand statue within the temple. These marks allow the Hero of Time to identify himself by playing Zelda’s Lullaby, the song of the Royal Family. As I have pointed out elsewhere, this possibly points to a time in the distant past when the two nations were not enemies. Either way, Twinrova who now control the temple, and hates the Royal Family, do not defile or remove these marks. They must recognise that the symbol of the Triforce is older than the Royal Family, and while their enemies may have appropriated it, the symbol represents something that they still revere. As already mentioned, the Triforce is the ultimate source of Light, and we’ve seen it associated with the Sun in the Churches from ALTTP and ALBW. So, it’s fascinating to see so much solar symbolism in this temple. The first, and most easily missed, is the view from the entrance of the temple at dawn. Do you really think it’s a coincidence that the developers programmed this to happen? They are clearly linking the worship performed in this Gerudo temple to the Sun. Apart from that, inside the temple there are Sun Switches that are activated by reflecting beams of sunlight. Some of the puzzles in the dungeon require the Mirror Shield to reflect the sunlight. This shield is marked with the Gerudo Crest. There are also other Winged Sun symbols within the temple, but instead of the Triforce, these have an Eye symbol at the centre. The eye is also associated with Light, as we cannot see without it. What are the real world influences for the Sun and Eye symbols in this setting? In Ancient Egypt, the Sun was worshipped as the chief god Ra, the creator of the universe and the giver of life (showing a connection to the Golden Goddesses). Ra was associated with a bird, the falcon. Images of a solar disc were called the Eye of Ra. This aspect of Ra was actually personified as a female deity. This goddess represented Ra’s power, and could act independently from him. Sometimes it was deeply involved in Ra’s creative acts, and at other times it could become extremely violent when subduing Ra’s enemies, even becoming uncontrollable. This highlighted the positive and negative effects of the Sun in an ancient Egyptian’s life. This duality of protectiveness and aggressiveness showed that:
“the Egyptians saw a double nature to the feminine, which encompassed both extreme passions of fury and love.”
This perfectly represents the Gerudo. For example, the Gerudo champion Urbosa from BotW shows motherly protection to those she cares for, but unleashes her Fury on her enemies. It’s important to note that the symbol for the Spirit Medallion is the yin and yang, which represents opposite but complementary forces in nature. Also, the Japanese word for soul, used in Soul Temple, can also mean yang energy, which is visible, energetic, and associated with the Sun. This fits very well with the Gerudo and their temple in the middle of a desert. Note too, that Nabooru’s name is most likely a variation of the Japanese word 昇る, Noboru, which means ascend or rise, and can describe a natural process like the Sun rising. The Eye of Ra can take on different appearances. Sometimes it’s a lioness, and this reminds us of the images of lions used in the Gerudo Training Ground. But, there’s another animal with which the Eye of Ra is commonly associated. The Egyptian Cobra, or Uraeus. Some believe that the new Gerudo Crest, which replaced the mirrored Star and Crescent, are the markings found on the hood of a cobra. Cobra statues are found throughout the temple, some are even connected to Light from the Sun. One Egyptian myth about the Eye of Ra takes place before the creation of the world:
when the solar creator Ra is alone. Shu and Tefnut, the children of this creator god, have drifted away from him in the waters of Nu, the chaos that exists before creation in Egyptian belief, so he sends out his eye to find them. The eye returns with Shu and Tefnut but is infuriated to see that the creator has developed a new eye, which has taken her place. The creator god appeases her by giving her an exalted position on his forehead in the form of the uraeus, the emblematic cobra that appears frequently in Egyptian art, particularly on royal crowns. The equation of the eye with the uraeus and the crown underlines the eye's role as a companion to Ra and to the pharaoh, with whom Ra is linked.
Also:
In art, the sun disk image often incorporates one or two uraei coiled around it. The solar uraeus represents the eye as a dangerous force that encircles the sun god and guards against his enemies, spitting flames like venom.
This very much reminds us of the floor compass in the temple chamber where you fight Twinrova. A solar disk surrounded by snakes. (Grezzo changed the snakes to crescent moons in the remake, which calls to mind the old version of the Gerudo Crest.) In Ancient Egyptian art, the uraeus represents sovereignty, royalty, deity, and divine authority. (There it is again!) The Eye of Ra, in the form of a uraeus, was sometimes named Wadjet, the snake goddess and one of the earliest Egyptian deities. She was sometimes depicted as a woman with two snake heads, or as a snake with a woman’s head. And so we come to the most prominent symbol of worship in the Spirit Temple, the Goddess of the Sand. Two massive statues of her, one outside and the other inside, dominate the temple. From everything I’ve just discussed about the real world influences of the Gerudo and the Spirit Temple, I think it’s clear that the Goddess of the Sand references the Eye of Ra. And, just as that Egyptian Goddess represents the dual nature of the feminine, the Goddess of the Sand is the personification of the nature of the Gerudo. It’s entirely fitting that she is worshipped by the Gerudo in their Soul Temple. Was she an actual god of the Light World, their guardian deity? That part is not clear. Yet. We don’t even know her real name. “Goddess of the Sand” was the description given by the Sheikah in their legend of the temples. The Sheikah were likely enemies of the Gerudo when this prophecy of the Hero of Time was given. So, we have no idea if that is what the Gerudo call her, but I somehow doubt it. According to Saria:
An odd bird told me something, “Young one, take the ocarina with you and go to the desert goddess".
The odd bird is undoubtedly Kaepora Gaebora. Therefore, according to the reincarnation of that ancient Sage, it was also known as the Desert Goddess in the past. Why is she called an Evil God in the Japanese version? I think I understand this better, now that I understand the real world influences and cultures the developers were drawing on. Whatever the nature of their relationship in the distant past, the Kingdom of Hyrule and the Gerudo are enemies in OoT. Two nations opposed to each other, with different religions. Of course they would view their enemy’s god as evil! Just like with Christianity and Islam, who both claim to worship the God of Abraham, both the Hylians and the Gerudo worship the Triforce, and the Golden Goddesses it represents. However, Christians believe that Christ’s teachings lead them to God, and Muslims believe that the teachings of Muhammad do so, and therefore they are at odds. Do we see the comparison in Zelda? Yes. Remember the Churches in ALTTP and ALBW? We saw the Triforce in a solar disc, but it was the Winged Goddess Figure/Stylised Cross which featured prominently inside and outside of the Church. She is the focus of the Hylian religion. In the Spirit Temple, we saw the Triforce in a solar disc, but it was the Goddess of the Sand which featured prominently inside and outside of the Temple. She is the focus of the Gerudo religion. Two opposing goddesses. We can’t avoid it any longer. We need to talk about the identity of the Winged Goddess, who is at the centre of this discussion, but who I’ve avoided naming till now. And that’s because she wasn’t fully revealed until Skyward Sword. This post continues in Part III, found here.
